French Broadside: Gendarmerie d’Ordonnance de l’Empereur
French recruitment broadside headed “Gendarmerie d’Ordonnance de l’Empereur,” issued by Prefect of Vaucluse Francois-Pascal Delattre, one page, 16 x 19.25, October 17, 1806. A “New Notice to Young Men,” in part (translated): “The Prefect of Vaucluse hopes that he will not have made a vain appeal to the young men of the Department; he flatters himself that they will be sensible of the value of the favor His Majesty grants them in permitting them to give, under his eyes, proof of their devotion to his person and the state. In order to leave nothing in doubt which relates to admission to and service in the Gendarmes d’Ordonnance of the Emperor, he informs the youth of the Department, supplementing the announcement which he has already published.” The document lists nine points, detailing the length of the engagement, promising a modest pay from the government, and noting that they would be prioritized for promotion if interested in starting a military career. Mounted and framed to an overall size of 18.5 x 22. In very good to fine condition, with scattered dampstaining.
