World War I: Joan of Arc Poster
Attractive original color 20.25 x 30.25 poster dating to World War I and published by the United States Printing & Lithograph, Co. of New York [1918], which depicts a Haskell Coffin painting of an armored Joan of Arc raising a sword under yellow text: “Joan of Arc Saved France.” The lower border features bold black text: “Women of America, Save Your Country, Buy War Savings Stamps, United States Treasury Department.” In very good to fine condition, with creasing to the bottom corners, small edge tears, and loss to the upper left corner. Commissioned by the United States Department of the Treasury, Haskell Coffin created this poster in 1918. Feeding off the popularization of Joan of Arc in American culture, Haskell used the image of Joan of Arc to encourage women to buy War Savings Stamps in order to save their country, much as Joan of Arc saved France.
